Most sump pits I open up are doing double duty, draining water and letting soil gas straight into the basement. If yours sits open, or has a lid that got pulled for pump work and never went back on right, it's usually the easiest path radon has into the house, easier than a slab crack, easier than most penetrations. Before I seal anything, I check whether that pit should also be my suction point, because on plenty of York County jobs it's the most efficient one available.

A sump pit isn't part of the radon system until it needs to be. Some sumps just get sealed and left alone. Others become the suction point for the whole system. That decision comes from what I find under the slab during the walkthrough, not a default I apply to every job. Either way, the pump stays fully serviceable. A proper sealed lid is built to be accessed for service, not closed up for good.

Sump pits aren't original equipment on most of the older housing stock downtown, in Royal Square, or up around Farquhar Park and the Avenues. A lot of those basements are stone or rubble foundations that never had a pit until someone added one during a later waterproofing job, and that's usually where I find a lid that was never sealed right to begin with. Out in Springettsbury, Spring Garden, and the newer construction toward West York and Mount Zion Road, sump pits are standard with the poured-slab, perimeter-drain setup, and they're usually easier to integrate cleanly because the plumbing was designed in from the start. Farther out toward Shiloh, Leader Heights, Emigsville, and the Susquehanna Trail corridor, I run into farmhouses where a sump got added alongside a French drain during a basement renovation years after the original foundation, and the seal on those is the one I check most carefully.

A few things people ask

Can you just use my existing sump pump for the radon system?

No. The sump pump moves water. The radon system depressurizes air. They can share the pit, but they're doing two different jobs, and the seal has to accommodate both without interfering with either.

Do I have to seal the sump if I get a radon system?

If the sump's part of your soil-gas pathway, yes, sealing it is usually part of the job. If it's not contributing to the reading, I'll tell you that instead of sealing something that doesn't need it.

Will I still be able to get to the pump if something goes wrong?

Yes. A proper sealed lid is built to be accessed for service, not permanently closed up.

Someone opened my sump for pump work and now my radon number's up. Is that related?

It can be. A previously sealed sump that gets opened for pump service and isn't resealed right is one of the more common ways I see a working system start underperforming.
